W.Y. Mitchell Jr.

WY Mitchell, Jr., 97, of Clovis, N.M., passed away on August 27, 2022, at his home at Wheatfields Senior Living Community in Clovis.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Thursday,September 1, at Steed-Todd Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 2, at Restoration Baptist Church at Giddings St (formerly First Baptist Church) in Clovis with his grandson, Caleb Mitchell, officiating.

Graveside services immediately following at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. WY was born at House, N.M., to William Mitchelland Cora Nelson on January 1, 1925.

He attended school in House and graduated from House High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Della Franklin, after returning from

fighting with the U.S. Army in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany during World War II.

They married on Della’s birthday just after she graduated from high school on May 19, 1946, and were married for 70 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Clovis. He was a deacon and taught Sunday School for over 60 years.

He is survived by his son, Leon (Angie) Mitchell of Borger, Texas, his daughter-in-law, Judy Mitchell; four grandchildren, Kimberly (Stuart) Spivey, Kristen (Travis) Guthrie, Mara (Jessie) Flores, and Caleb (Leah) Mitchell; and 13 great-grandchildren, Abigail, Alaina, Andrea, Asher, Aubrey, Estefan, Hope, Landry, Mitchell, Nathan, Selah, Thomas, and Will.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Della Mitchell, his son, Dr. Gary Mitchell, his brothers Hugh Mitchell, Glenn Mitchell, George Mitchell, Herman Mitchell, Orville Mitchell, and his sisters Mary Griggs, Argie Mitchell, and Kate Franklin.
