Zonah Maude Monk Crooks, age 97, was born August 15, 1915 in Hulver, Hall County, Texas to Alvoid Monk and Pearl Eliza Timmons Monk. She passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the Farwell Care and Rehabilitation Center.
She is survived by two sons, Arlye Crooks and his wife Margie, of Texico, NM, Paul Crooks and his wife Roxie, of Lubbock, TX daughterinlaw, Lynne Parker Crooks of Elizabeth, CO eight grandchildren, Gia Crooks Hardage, Britt Crooks, Lisa Crooks Cortes, Jana Crooks Scott, Jean Ann Crooks Tomlin, and John Gregory III, David Gregory and Paula Fritzsche thirteen grandchildren Chase Hardage, Kendra Crooks, Beau Riley, Danielle Riley Geiser, Hailey Tomlin, Hannah Tomlin, Angela Patterson Sikes, Karis and Cole Fritzsche, Rachel and Benjamin Gregory, and Brandon Patton six great great grandchildren, Lucy Riley, Michael David Riley and Jacob Geiser, Sean Riley Geiser, and Breylan Patton, Breanna Patton.
Preceding her in death are her parents her husband R.E. Tooter Crooks one son, Joel Keith Crooks, a veteran having served in the Army 82nd Airborne Division and also he was a police officer for the Aurora, Colorado Police Department two sisters, Annie Seal and Katie Crain two brothers, Glendell Monk in WWII and Winford Monk granddaughterinlaw Tonye Harrington Crooks and great grandson, Taylor Brian Crooks.
Zonah was raised up in the Cee Vee and Northfield, Texas area. She attended some of her school years in Northfield. She worked along with her siblings on the family farm. On December 2, 1933, she married R.E. Tooter Crooks in Hollis, Oklahoma. They were married 70 years when R.E. passed away. They moved to Buena Park, California in the early 1940s, and during that time she worked at the Knots Berry Farm and Murphy Ranch. In the mid40s they moved to Melrose, NM. Zonah drove to Clovis every day to work in Dr. Groves Chiropractic Clinic. The family, which now included two sons, moved back to Texico in 1947. Her 3rd son Joel Keith was born in 1950. Texico remained their home as long as they both lived. Zonah worked for the Texico Schools for 28 years as a bus driver, custodian and a cook in the lunch room. She retired from Texico Schools in 1981. Zonah was a member of the Texico Senior Citizens group and became involved in ceramics and painting. She was also an excellent seamstress, enjoyed gardening, canning, was a super good cook and was famous for her large family dinners. She loved her pet poodles, and enjoyed camping out and fishing with her family. She was faithful in attending school activities of her three sons and her grandchildren who lived in the area. Attending family reunions was one of her favorite events. She was a member of the Texico Baptist Church.
Services will be held for Zonah on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in the SteedTodd Chapel with Paul Crooks, officiating. A graveside service will be held also on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Texico Cemetery. All her grandchildren and great grandchildren will serve as casket bearers.
